Abstract:

Materials research must be planned on a long-term basis that is centred in industry and connected with preproduction research at universities and non-university institutions. Five key technology fields were identified in which the production and processing of high-performance materials are the prerequisite for future-oriented technology developments. Collaborative development projects deal with applied materials research and development aimed at accelerating the development of products relevant for the world market on a medium-term basis. The main goal of long-term projects is to obtain basic knowledge which can lead to effective applications in various sectors of industry within a period of ten years or more.
